Historic Preservation Design Studio Project One

New Entrance/Face for a Historic Building
This project was done for the class HIPR 6660 under the instruction of Professor Wayde Brown in the MHP Program at The University of Georgia in the Fall of 2010.

The assignment for this project was to designa new entrance/face for one of the oldest buildings on campus. The building, Waddell Hall is getting ready to become home to the Institute for HistoricPreservation Research, so it was important to showcase preservation in the design.

The two main goals for my design were to respect the existing building and to showcase preservation. Because the building is located close to the main library on campus, there is heavy traffic passing by all day, so I felt that it was an excellent chance to showcase that preservation is more than the antiquing and turning into museums that most students think it is. I also wanted to express a modern approach to preservation that I felt the students would appreciate.

My final design includes a mostly glass, porch-like structure that allows the entire historic building to remain visible, but allows for a public space to view it. The design also includes an up to code ADA ramp to allow wheel chair access. However, the ramp is stepped back from the front of the new entrance in order to keep the symmetric look.
