ASPCA Prevents Animal Surrender

Jackson, Wyoming-based media personality and historical home restorer Hampton Barringer Luzak has been involved with several animal welfare shelters and organizations. In addition to personally rescuing dogs, Hampton Luzak has supported the work of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) by transporting abandoned animals to their shelter locations.

The ASPCA combats animal homelessness through several approaches, including reducing incidents of animal surrendering and abandonment. While the majority of the animals that end up in shelters are strays, a sizable percentage are animals who are given up by their owners.

There are multiple reasons why owners surrender their pets to shelters. For example, owners may face financial hardships that make it impossible to care for their pets. Moving to a new rental home can also be difficult for pet owners, as many landlords ban animals from their premises.

Finally, novice owners may not know how to handle difficult pet behaviors, and end up surrendering their animals. To reduce the financial burdens of pet ownership, the ASPCA coordinates low-cost clinics that offer veterinary care, as well as spay and neutering services.

ASPCA chapters have also set up food banks to help owners feed their pets, behavior counseling, and dog training classes. Some ASPCA shelters also provide temporary housing and other resources to prevent surrendering due to a sudden move.
