Prior to hitting the slopes, individuals should familiarize themselves with the seven-point Responsibility Code, developed by the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and observed by a number of related organizations, including the National Ski Patrol (NSP). The first and most important aspect of Your Responsibility Code is to maintain control while skiing at all times. Control is defined as the ability to safely stop or change directions in order to avoid another person or object on the trail.

Right of way is another important aspect of the code. Skiers must remember that individuals further down the hill cannot see them and, therefore, always have the right of way. With that said, skiers merging onto a trail or emerging from an area of low visibility must always look both ways before joining the trail, yielding to riders further up the mountain.

Additional aspects of the code, which can be read in full at www.nsp.org, include using devices, such as ski poles, to stop runaway equipment whenever possible, not stopping in a position that obstructs the flow of traffic on a trail, and adhering to all posted signs and trail markers.
