The Kenan and Flagler Families: Mary Lily's brother, William R. Kenan, Jr. discovered acetylene gas and the blow torch, which led to the creation of Union Carbide.

Mary Lily'd husband, Henry Morrison Flagler, co-founded the Standard Oil Co.(which later broke up into Exxon, Mobile, Chevron, and Amoco) with John D. Rockefeller. John D. credited Henry Flagler for being the "brains" behind Standard's then radically innovative "trustee" structure which led to Standard having a near monopoly over the world oil supply. Standard Oil was the world's first and largest multinational corporations. There has never been one as powerful.

In1911, Standard Oil was ultimately divided by the Supreme Court in a landmark case that made monopoly's unconstitutional. Standard was divided into 33 smaller oil companies, including Exxon, Mobile, Exxon, Mobile, Chevron, BP, AMCO ....

Henry Flagler is responsible for the development of Florida's eastern coast. He is known as the father of Miami and founder of palm beach. Prior to his arrival in Florida, the state was virtually inaccessible except by ship. Flagler's flagship hotel, the iconic Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, remains a Kenan family hotel, making it the oldest privately held hotel in the US.

The Kenan Family are philanthropists gifts are extensive and their primary giving interests is to educate americans from every social and economic status. They have endowed hundreds of professor positions around the country. Internationally the family endowed the Kenan Institute Asia, one of the world greatest NPOs, with its government and private partners has been instrumental in economic development throughout Southeast Asia, particularly Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Gifts to the University of North Carolina by the Kenan family total some $50 million. The UNC is the 1st public university in the United States. A Kenan was on UNC's 1st board and granted the institution land where the UNC is located.
