SHUTOFF Packaging Design

This packaging design was commissioned by a client for the release of their techno record. Drawing inspiration from out of service fire hydrants in Detroit (the birthplace of techno), I chose a sans serif typeface that I had at the studio. However, there were a limited number of characters in that font, so I printed the word “SHUTOFF” multiple times and in various letter order to provide a variety of specimens to work with. This ensured that every single letter on the cover was actually a uniquely distressed variant, as opposed to standard digital typefaces that use the same distressed character in every instance. After printing, the images were scanned and a digital layout and several mockups were created prior to the actual screenprinting of the sleeves.
