Baltimore Rising - Opening Title Sequence
Baltimore Rising is a documentary created, directed, and produced by actor and filmmaker Sonja Sohn and HBO Films. The documentary follows the protests of Freddie Gray, an unarmed African American man who was killed mid-arrest in 2015. What followed was a set of peaceful and dangerous protests in Baltimore fighting for justice and in hopes to end police brutality in the community. What began as peaceful marching with the Gray family turned into riots that set West Baltimore ablaze, and into division. This documentary attempts to document what ensued and spark peace and unity in the community.
This opening sequence uses found footage and photo manipulation animation to display a man’s journey through Baltimore as a citizen, and a potential victim. The layering of textures and imagery as well as the constant flow of motion represents the ever changing sociopolitical views of Baltimore, Maryland’s citizens, local leaders and police department.
