Joost van de Mortel - Animation

National Monument Camp Vught wants to make an essential contribution to moral consciousness in society by keeping alive the memory of concentration camp Vught and the fate of those who became connected to this place (also after the war). In addition, NMKV strives to make clear the current significance of the (im-)material testimonies and their connection to the issues of our time. The motto is: to remember is to reflect.

For this project I worked together with Gabriëlle van der Ven. She made the backgrounds out of newspaper and I made the animations. Together we did the final edit.

When starting this project we got a tour trough Camp Vught. This tour was guided by Niko Adema, who later became our voice actor. We both said it would be nice to have him as the voice actor without knowing anything about the animation so far. When we came back from the tour we got a file with information about Joost van de Mortel.

This project is the most special project I had the opportunity to work on. Joost van de Mortel was born in Tilburg and died later in Vught. Me (Janneke) lives in Tilburg and Gabriëlle lives in Vught. It was quit intense to think he probably went to many same places as where I walk daily. So is our school also called Sint Joost school of Art and Design. Too make it even more close, the mayor of Vught is a family member of Joost. We met him after the project and had a good talk.

I still want too thank everyone who helped us during this project and for the opportunity!

You can watch the final animation also here.
I started with some small tests of the bike. The bikes are made in Adobe Illustrator and later animated in Adobe After Effects. For the final edit we used Adobe Premiere Pro.
For the final animation I thought it would be nice too have a shadow of the bike on the ground too make it look more 3D. The frame by frame animation is made in Procreate. I first animated the bike and then the character. I am not sure if this was the best way too approach it but in the end it worked out.
