The Tragedy of Man is the most outstanding dramatic genre in Hungarian literature and Imre Madách's best-known work.
Madách's view of history, and thus the historical colours of the Tragedy, were strongly influenced by the triad set up by the German philosopher Georg Hegel. According to this, the prevailing ideas of different historical epochs (thesis) later turn into their opposite (antithesis), and in time dissolve into a single overarching idea (synthesis).
