BUSÓJÁRÁS FESTIVAL CHARACTER ILLUSTRATIONS

The Busójárás (meaning "Busó-walking") is an annual celebration of the Šokci living in the town of Mohács, Hungary, held at the end of the Carnival season, ending the day before Ash Wednesday. The celebration features Busós (people wearing traditional masks) and includes folk music, masquerading, parades and dancing.
This festival is close to my heart because Mohács is my hometown, so I decided to make some illustrations of the main characters of the Busójárás.
The Busó is the main character of the festival. He usually wears a mask carved from willow wood, traditionally painted with animal blood, with a sheepskin hood.
The "pretty Busós" are women dressed in Šokci folk costumes and covering their faces with veils. They are called Šokci girls and they are the Busó's partners.
The Jankele is another costumed figure of the Busójárás apart from the Busó. Its role is primarily to keep people walking on the street away from the Busós.
The celebration ends with the Farsangtemetés (Burial of Farsang), when the Busós burn the Winter's coffin on a large bonfire.
