Department Stores (“Kaufhaus”) like Kaufhof, Karstadt and Hertie have been the commercial powerhouse of German inner cities from the 70s to the 90s.
At the heart of every city in West Germany you could find one of these big chunky shopping temples. Today most department store are closed, while some still exist, appearing oddly out of time and place among stylish concept stores, flagship stores and global fashion chains.
