Foraging Table

This project is inspired by industrial sawdust waste generated by the furniture industry and how it can be used to add value.
Mycelium is an organism that can consume sawdust waste for nutrients. It can then be used as a material and/or to grow edible mushrooms.
Mycelium
Iterative sketching was used to nail down what a living piece of furniture might look like.
After the form was complete it was time to start fabricating.
The table was made from locally sourced ash
While the table was being fabricated the mycelium was growing.
When the bags were ready they were transferred to trays to keep growing.
Once the trays had fully grown out they were put in the fruiting chamber.
It wasn't long before mushrooms began growing out of the mycelium.
When the mushrooms were ready they were put on the table.
Then harvested.
The oyster mushrooms were cooked into a lovely carbonara dinner.
Friends and a local project partner were invited to enjoy a sustainable home grown meal at my home
Where's this thing going now?
This project will be featured at the Glenwood Gardens Visitors Center for the entire month of May. The exhibit will focus on mycelium's roll in nature, its current uses, and how it's used to grow food. I hope to inspire young kids and parents alike
to get involved in the amazing field of mycology.
