Marry in Norfolk: a magazine redesign

Marry in Norfolk is the official Norfolk County Council ceremonies guide, produced in association with Norfolk and Suffolk Bride. Inside are ideas, knowledge and advice from some of the best wedding suppliers in Norfolk. It features everything from dresses to venues, entertainers to florists and stationers to caterers, dedicated to planning a wedding locally in Norfolk.

Marry in Norfolk is published twice a year, with one Spring/Summer issue and one Autumn/Winter issue. It was first published in 2014, and I took over as the regular designer in 2018. I was given the opportunity to lead a redesign project in 2019 to update aesthetic of the magazine.
Above are some selected details of the original magazine design. Some of the main objectives of the redesign were:

• Simplify the typography
• Reduce the color palette from over 20 shades to 5
• Reduce superfluous graphic elements
• Simplify the panel styles
• Remove bunting featured on every editorial page
• Reinforce the presence of the grid, making pages feel more structured and orderly

Below are the results of the redesign project, first used in the Summer/Spring 2019 issue. The same design is also used for A Kentish Ceremony (the official Norfolk County Council ceremonies guide) with minor adjustments.
Below is an example of a Real Life Wedding page, showcasing images and interviews from council weddings in the county. These are some of the main features in the magazine, and makes up the middle section of Marry in Norfolk. These pages follow one of four versions of a template, to keep consistency
Below is an example of a bespoke feature.
Below is an example of a product page. To keep product pages clean and orderly, it follows the grid and has a very modular design. This allows for the products, in this case wedding dresses, to remain in focus.
