Yu Zhitong is an emerging artist, currently studying at the Nantes National Academy of Fine Arts. By June 2019 he will complete his masters degree.

Yu Zhitong was born in 1991, in Harbin, a city in Northern China, which is frozen cold in winter. His family are all keen on art and have always encouraged him to work on it. He started to learn Chinese painting at the age of eight and at the age of 14, he was admitted to the High School affiliated to the Central Academy of Fine Arts in China. During the cultural revolution, his uncle had missed the chance to study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, but Yu Zhitong was lucky enough to be accepted more than 30 years later. He then received an offer from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and became an animation student .

During his college years, Yu Zhitong learnt to make animated films and to manipulate various design softwares. He learned to express through stories, gradually, he enjoyed creating short films that he adapted according to traditional Chinese folklores and fairytales. He started forming his own style that influenced his later creations. After completing his bachelor degree Yu Zhitong realized that the complicated and repetitive processes of computer animation were killing his passion for art. He was eager to express more freely, more broadly and more efficiently so he chose to continue his studies in fine art and came to Nantes, France.

As an artist, he joined two Group exhibitions,“FORUM DES ARTS” and “INVOQUER L’INCINSCIENT COLLECTIF” in Nantes with other young artists.
My paintings are strange to me. Just like a pair of tarot cards. They are also important ways for me to understand myself. My work includes a series of emotions such as my desire, my anger, and my attitude towards the world. I never try to “make” a painting, it is simply the fermentation of my inner emotions; my growing experiences and cultural background naturally flow out.

I believe in animism. I like to stir up daily life, blur the line between reality and fantasy, man and animal, heaven and earth, and then I draw inspiration from this. I enjoy the exciting pleasure of creating new things by mixing disparate things together. I am inclined to speak indirectly through my works, gently but forcefully, so they are often surrealistic or symbolic.

Since studying in France, under the style of the French academic arts, which are strongly different from those of China, I was forced to develop my own style rather than simply doing assignments. I adore Jan Svankmajer and Dali and I have been deeply affected by their works. I believe that the key of the traditional arts is to create delicate and realistic forms, while the key of contemporary arts is to collect and fuse different ideas. Therefore, I combine irrelevant things boldly in my works, which brings the unexpected, and makes the illogic logical.

Read Less
