Yelitsa Jean-Charles is an NYC transplant trying to figure out where to get plantains in the midwest (any recommendations are welcome). She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design where she studied Illustration with a concentration in Gender, Race & Sexuality.

She identifies as a visual activist, using her art to prompt discussions about race and social awareness of systematic injustices. She recognizes that artists have a responsibility as society’s image-makers. She encourages artists to recognize the impact and influence their work has and be held accountable for the work they create. At RISD she held several leadership roles including President of Black Artists and Designers, Vice President of RISD Feminists, and President of RISD’s NAACP Chapter --- to organize community events prompting social responsibility amongst visual artists and the work they create. Her community work includes teaching at Providence CityArts, organizing a Black Lives Matter Protest, and a Ferguson teach-in and art installation.

Her current focus is Healthy Roots, a doll/storybook that come in different skin tones and facial features to bring diversity to the toy aisle. In 2015 Yelitsa Jean-Charles was accepted as a Brown Social Innovation Fellow for her Healthy Roots venture, and successfully raised $50k to launch the product.

Through her work she hopes to foster confidence, self-love, and self-efficacy among young girls of color by teaching them about their culture and identity. You can follow her work and activities at:
