Artist Statement, 2016:

Lix North’s eccentric, hyperrealist self-portraits explore her own internal landscape and its reflection in the world around her. Laced with metaphor, augmented with ornate detail and a hint of satire, her portraits juxtapose the commonplace with the wonderfully strange.

Ever technically explorative, Lix is particularly fond of the interplay between elements of intense detail and contemplative space. Each composition is carefully contrived; from the imagining and construction of elaborate props, to calculated palette selection and the accentuation of key conceptual and compositional elements.

Warrior or fool, explorer or martyr, barbarian or philosopher. Each work, each incarnation of self, tells the story of a personal battle, ideology or foible. Hers is a world where DNA mutations, pop culture fascinations and psychological machinations collide in a timeless grasp for identity that bestrides the bounds of the ordinary.

Brief Biography:

Lix North secured her first solo show at one of Auckland’s most enduring and respected contemporary galleries, the Oedipus Rex, within 12 months of graduating art school. Winning the Telecom NZ Art Award in 1999, just months prior to graduating from NMIT’s School of Visual Arts, by 2003 she became the youngest artist published in E.M. Caughey’s book ’Art New Zealand Today’.

Lix cites a childhood in the stunning, yet isolated, New Zealand hill country as the catalyst for her ever-active imagination and unique way of seeing the world. In 2007 she moved from New Zealand to Brisbane, Australia, spending the majority of the ensuing decade as a professional illustrator, photographer and commission artist under the name of her graphic art studio, Lix Creative.

2016 sees Lix return her focus to conceptual fine art and exhibition, kicking off her comeback as a category winner in the 2016 Lethbridge 10,000 Art Award.

Lix is represented in Brisbane, Australia by the Lethbridge Gallery.
