Yali Szulanski is a writer, teacher, activist and consultant who lives to uncover truth within herself and others. Her raw, unapologetic writing style emerges from her life of learning to thrive through constant transition and finding strength from times of struggle. Her poetry and prose reach into the most visceral places, giving voice to true emotion and spirituality.
Yali was born into a multicultural home – a rich infusion of her mother’s spirited Israeli culture with her father’s vibrant Argentinean tradition. Her family journey was one of transition and constant changes – not only in her physical environment, through cross-continental moves, but also in structure and understanding of the world. This meant that she repeatedly had to assert her identity growing up and often led to extended periods of loneliness. Yali found solace in a vivid inner world of imagination. Her need to describe her experiences fueled her love for manipulating words and her unequivocal acceptance of all walks of humanity. Writing, in all of the languages she learned and taught herself along the way, became her way to interpret the world.
Throughout her life, Yali battled with recurring instances of physical and sexual abuse that eventually culminated in a shattering of her self perception, sparking a vicious cycle of eating disorders and self harm. In the midst of battle for her health, doctors unilaterally informed her that her only chance at recovery was extended inpatient therapy and life-long medication. Rather than accept their grim predictions, Yali fought and rehabilitated herself by tuning into her innate ability to heal. She turned to her writing as a tool to release the pain and cleanse the wounds within, culminating in Talking To Myself, a memoir about her struggle and quest to survive.
In the midst of recovery, Yali helped construct Creative Writing programs in Singapore for elementary and middle schools. Encouraging the kids tap into their wealth of imagination, she coached teams of students in regional slam poetry competitions. Inspired by how the power of words could help others tap into their inner strength and confidence, Yali continues to build these programs for schools and individuals through her creative writing workshops.
Through community exposure to her work, with the backing of INSEAD Business School in Singapore, Yali worked alongside top executives to apply her breadth of talent and insight to the strategy used in campaigns today. She has done work with Visa, JCDecaux, General Instrument, Symantec, and HSBC. With a gathering well of experience, Yali tapped into her innate desire to impart change and turned her skill towards community organizations, most notably the Tel Aviv Sexual Assault Crisis Center in Israel, as a crisis advocate, fundraiser and producer in the organization. She furthered her own healing and recovery by being able to provide the healing and support for other women.
Yali’s experiences and sensitivity to the environment around her enables her to tune into those she works and connects with, to encourage their self-healing, transformation and growth. She believes that with the right tools, guidance and support, everyone can access the strength within themselves and the path towards transforming themselves and their lives. She now translates all of this experience, and desire to empower others through her writing, poetry and strategy insights in the development and growth of Sacred Warrior, along with independent and collaborative books.
