Hi, my name is Radhika! I am a designer with 10+ years of experience in interactive design, games and learning.

As Badge System Designer at Mozilla Foundation, I defined and visualized new ways to represent a digital badge system. This exploration lead to the creation of BadgeDeck - a prototype interactive toolkit to help users think through the various elements of a badge system. Before that, I worked with the Open Badges team to develop badge criteria for their city-wide pilot at Chicago Summer of Learning (CSOL) and created HTML/ CSS tutorials for Mozilla’s launch of Thimble - an online code editor for learners and educators.

As founding staff at Institute of Play, I had the unique opportunity to be a part of starting the innovative New York City public school - Quest to Learn. In my role as Game and Curriculum Designer, I collaborated with teachers and content experts to create learning experiences that engaged 6th graders in exciting ways. This included the design and development of game-based STEAM curricula, narratives, mini games, artwork and materials. My work such as Trouble in Troggleton and Cityhop were highlighted in the New York Times, NPR and PBS- Frontline.

For the Gamestar Mechanic Learning Guide, a project funded by the MacArthur Foundation, I developed the overall curriculum structure, lessons, challenge cards and games. Gamestar Mechanic is a digital game and online community that teaches kids how to design their own games. The Learning Guide is an extensive game design and systems thinking curricular resource to further build on the in-game learning. While at the Institute, I also took on the responsibility of designing and building the initial websites for both Institute of Play and Quest to Learn.

As co-lead of Playing for Keeps - a youth-based after school gaming program run by Global Kids, I was responsible for developing the game design curriculum, teaching lessons on game design and facilitating the process of developing games based on social issues chosen by students. For example, Hurricane Katrina: Tempest in Crescent City is a digital game that was created to spread awareness on disaster readiness. Consent! is an immersive game-like experience in Teen Second Life created to raise awareness around medical racism in the American prison system.

In my role as Associate Producer at Scholastic, I designed the user interaction (UI) and user experience (UX) of Career Simulator - an interactive online tool for high school students to explore STEM careers. This project involved extensive research on career possibilities based on decisions that students make at high school, undergraduate and graduate levels. The main goal was to expose kids to choices that they did not know existed and how they could be combined in different ways leading to a variety of real world job opportunities.

As a graduate of the MFA Design & Technology program at Parsons The New School for Design, I focused on exploring games as a medium for learning while combining the use of old and new media to create fun, engaging experiences. My game Panchatantra, designed to educate kids on the ancient tales of wisdom from India, was exhibited at the Parsons MFA thesis show and the Games for Change Expo. My background in interactive design coupled with a growing interest in games and learning led me to work on youth related projects at Scholastic, Global Kids, Institute of Play and Mozilla.
