It doesn't have to be expensive--line, proportion, silhouette, color--all translate into any style or price range.

My background has been about clothing since I was little. I grew up in the Midwest and my Mom taught me to sew when I was 8. I took many years of projects to 4-H and made clothes for myself and for friends in high school. After getting a Bachelor's in Clothing & Textiles at MSU, I flew by the seat of my pants (haha-pun intended) to the place I knew I could get the knowledge and experience I so desperately wanted--- New York City. I landed a job within a month (a horrible garmento experience) and worked 2 jobs at a time for about 10 years as I worked my way up 7th Avenue.

My first real pattern making job was at a pattern service. I was a kid (okay, I was 23) and I was juggling 8 client workloads, making all 1st patterns, overseeing the sewing of prototypes, making flat sketches by hand, and assisting with the production patterns.

I bounced around 7th Avenue for a few years and then landed a job at Ellen Tracy. It was the most challenging and rewarding job I had ever had. There were about 20 pattern makers there-most of them masters at their trade, and all very generous with their knowledge and willing to help me learn. I worked on garments for runway shows, magazine shoots, dresses for famous models and celebrities, and created between 50-70 pieces for the showroom each season. It was an incredible experience.

So now my career has come full circle. I have my own pattern design service. I specialize in patterns for dresses, evening wear, bridal, and sportswear. I offer 1st through production patterns, prototypes, and consulting for fit issues. I am also able to work remotely using Skype for fittings (for out of state clients). I have also recently added custom dresses to my services. For a free consultation on available studio time, I can be reached at nypatternmaking@aol.com or 516-375-3807. Read Less
