Katja Thiele is a visual artist based in Amsterdam. Her work consists of sculptures, drawings, etchings and decorated leather jewellry.

Birds are a central theme in her work and the artist is fascinated by their movement and colors. She expresses this fascination clearly through her work, where color and movement coalesce into a graceful dance. Katja's scuplures are color in motion. The same colorful dynamic is also present in her drawings in pastel. Here she brings her subjects to life by letting them dance, mate and caress. Katja's jewellry reveal a broad interest in art, with references to Art Deco style and Greek antiquity.

At a young age Katja Thiele started to work as a potter and learned to master the art of painting Delftware. In the evening she attended courses in painting, sculpting and etching at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam where she obtained a degree in Arts. In later years she studied handicrafts, earning a diploma as creative occupational therapist. During this course, she widened her palet of techniques. Katja's sculptures show this versatility; they are made from wire, tin, papier mâché, enamel paint and various other materials. She makes the papier mâché herself to obtain a surface as smooth as porcelain. This is a hommage to China, where papier mâché was invented during the Han Dynasty (BC202-AD220). Read Less
