i grew up in southern california and discovered a passion for design sometime in high school. i never had formal training in art or design; thanks to my parents' acceptance and encouragement, i learned by doing. the first project i remember completing was when i removed my closet doors on a whim and stayed up all night to abstractly paint the walls and create a new desk area in my room.

the next project was to take my plain white dresser i had throughout my entire childhood and make it my own. it ended up being a different design on each drawer with inspirational quotes painted on the narrow top edge of each one to boost my spirits in the morning while getting dressed. i also found it necessary to add clouds to the ceiling over my bay window.

although i realized my passion for design early on, i never thought it was something i could apply in the real world. i studied philosophy, math & physics in college, fulfilling the logical, analytical side of my brain. after graduating, i realized that i missed using my creative side and needed to find a job in a creative field. my first job after college was working for the local newspaper and magazine.

i owe a lot of my professional design experience to my first job at south pasadena publishing. i learned everything from ad sales & marketing to ad design & newspaper layout. in all future jobs, i found myself getting involved with marketing and design more & more, even if it fell outside of my defined roles. i'm beginning to realize that marketing really encompasses most of my interests - design, layout, business & analytics.
