Ernest Barbella, a food industry consultant, has taken his 50 years of experience, expertise, and executive leadership in the food retailer industry to provide advisory services on business operations. Mr. Barbella has also started a spice manufacturing company in Qingdao, China, that produces over 250 spices, which are sold in the U.S., Australia, the Azores islands, Panama, the Bahamas, and other foreign countries. Along with his spice manufacturing operation, Mr. Barbella has recently acquired a pasta packing company that sells products to the U.S. and foreign retailers.

Before his consulting services and entrepreneurial ventures, Ernest Barbella, a resident of Syosset, New York, worked as an executive for a number of well-known food retail companies in the New York area. Mr. Barbella began his career at Daitch Shopwell Supermarkets, known currently as the Food Emporium, where he became District Manager and managed seven stores in the Bronx. Ernest Barbella then spent the next 10 years at Wakefern Food Corporation and, after a series of promotions, eventually served simultaneously as the Vice President of its Meat and Frozen Food Divisions as well as of Retail Store Operations.

Ernest Barbella left Wakefern for Hills Supermarkets, where he served as Executive Vice President. Mr. Barbella’s responsibilities included overseeing all aspects of the $750 million chain, including store operations, merchandising, procurement, financial control, and warehousing. Transitioning from Hills Supermarkets, Mr. Barbella began serving as the Vice President and General Manager for the New York operations of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A & P). Helping to oversee the $2 billion operation and its 10,000 employees, he was the youngest Vice President in A & P history.

Ernest Barbella also owned and ran five successful supermarkets in Long Island, New York, which he sold in 1995. He is a member of Saint Edward’s Parish Church in Syosset, New York, and has been married to his wife, Marguerite Cappiello Barbella, for 47 years. Read Less
