A self-taught writer and artist, Dan has created editorial illustrations and comics for the likes of AMC Television, Wired, Random House, BBC Radio 4, IDW Publishing, Time Magazine, Hachette Books, Foreign Policy, Entertainment Weekly and New York Magazine. His work has been profiled by The New York Times, Al-Jazeera, Publisher’s Weekly, NPR, Sky News, BBC, The Village Voice and Advertising Age.
Beginning his career in DIY web-publishing, Goldman co-founded the Brooklyn-based ACT-I-VATE webcomics collective in 2006 as an “online laboratory for experimental comics,” moving from a group blog on LiveJournal to become a New York Times-featured online anthology hosting long-form comics works by over 50 international cartoonists.
In 2006, he garnered an Eisner Award nomination for his webcomic Shooting War (with Anthony Lappé), called “the Apocalypse Now of the War on Terror” by Forbes. Published by Grand Central Publishing (US) with editions in the UK, Italian, French and Spanish, Shooting War was lauded by publications around the world, from Wired Magazine and Brazil’s Folha de São Paulo to India’s Business Standard and Tokyo’s Daily Yomiuri.
In the rollup to the 2008 presidential election, he collaborated with journalist Michael Crowley on 08: A Graphic Diary of the Campaign Trail, a nonfiction graphic novel written and drawn in real-time. A singular achievement in comics journalism, “08” was already on bookstore shelves the week Obama was sworn into office. NPR Books praised it as “strik[ing] out on its own to create a method of visual storytelling that owes as much to ’60s magazine layouts as it does to modern Web design. It’s largely thanks to Goldman’s singular graphical style that this book… feels so defiantly and refreshingly unconventional.” The week of its release, “08” was touted as “highbrow brilliant” by New York Magazine.
Pivoting from political material, his next comic series Red Light Properties followed a husband-and-wife-owned real estate agency specializing in exorcising and selling “previously-haunted homes”. A critical darling in its online serialization and digital publication through Monkeybrain Comics, it was published as a graphic novel in 2014 by IDW Publishing and is currently in development as a cable television series.
Currently, Dan is the co-creator and artist of the hugely-popular augmented reality comic book series, Priya’s Shakti. Funded by the World Bank and the Tribeca Film Institute, the series features the first Indian female superhero who is a rape survivor. Following its release, Priya was honored by UN Women as a “Gender Equality Champion.” The first chapter Priya’s Shakti launched at the 2014 Mumbai Comic Con, immediately going viral with over 500,000 downloads and over 400 news stories reaching over 20 million readers. Its second chapter, Priya’s Mirror, will premiere in NYC on September 30 as part of the NY Film Festival’s Convergence lineup.
Dan has also written the official mobile videogame for AMC’s The Walking Dead and works on second-screen applications for several of their flagship original series, including Breaking Bad, Halt & Catch Fire and both Walking Dead series.
A frequent speaker on the digital possibilities for comics’ evolution and distribution, he has led panels or spoken at tech/media/entertainment conferences such as SXSW Interactive, New York Comic-Con, Mostra 3M de Arte Digital, Mumbai Comic-Con, DIY Days, PixelShow São Paulo 2011 and M.I.T.’s Futures of Entertainment 4.
