I’m an artist-at-large, playing with the perspective that existence reflects & is an extension of the self. I create landscapes that move through the physical realm towards an exploration of emotional, mental and spiritual terrain.

Existence is a reflection and extension of the self. I’m exploring that perspective as I expand my appreciation of everything around me. I’m on a journey of seeing and experiencing the wonder and brilliance of all that is. My paintings have come out of my passion to explore both the world around me, and the world within.

It is when I’m painting that I most feel connected to the me that’s me, the totality of myself. During the creation process, I feel as if there is only the moment, and I experience an opening of myself to all that I am. Through my engagement with my materials and the use of my body, my eyes and my hands particularly, I engage the physical self. As I transform fresh canvases, my emotional, mental and spiritual self are activated as well, as I use the process of creation to explore my emotions, my mind and my journey of greater self-awareness. In a way, I infuse a kind of snap-shot of myself in my paintings and all of my creations. Once a painting is completed, and introduced to the world, not only does it communicate my essence, it also acts as an opportunity for another, through observation, to explore their own essence and totality.

From one perspective, my current paintings fall under the category of abstract or non-representational. True, I’m exploring colour and form in a number of ways while not usually choosing to consciously depict easily or universally recognizable objects or scenes. I’ve found I prefer to create “abstract” work as I enjoy creating and nurturing an opportunity for the limitless possibilities and interpretations that can present themselves to the viewer in any moment when they view my work. I’m presenting abstract concepts, and various emotions, ideas, thoughts and perspectives in my work, that would be limited were they depicted in a particular concrete, physical way. I often think of my work as falling into the categories of non-conventional landscapes or self-portraits.

I draw inspiration for my paintings from a combination of several elements. In addition to reflecting my journey of self-growth and awareness, my painting are extensions of my interactions and appreciation for the natural world and landscapes. I’ve been particularly drawn to the west coast environs of British Columbia and California, including Vancouver, San Francisco, Carmel, and Santa Cruz. Much of my work reflects my appreciation for the ocean, its movements, and the terrains that surround it. Some of the paintings I create are also inspired by the microscopic landscapes of biology and cell formation. Finally, they are explorations of the landscapes of the universe, the movements and brilliance of stars, constellations, and supernovas.

I create my paintings out of my desire to share my explorations and communicate my perspectives and thoughts with the world in a physical way. It is also my desire to create beauty, and to inspire others to pause and appreciate not only the world around them, but also to see a reflection of beauty, love, and brilliance within themselves.
