I am a Renaissance man and industrial artist. I am an expert in a few fields but speak the language and draw from many different fields of study. I believe that by furthering your education in multiple fields simultaneously it is possible to have fuller and more truthful view of what our world and universe looks like. Our world is tightly connected but it is only possible to see these connections by studying across multiple vocations.
I consult, design, and work in a multitude of different fields and industries. The most interesting thing about Renaissance artist like da Vinci (a personal hero) is that they were not only considered experts in many fields but they also practiced in many fields. Da Vinci practiced in fine art but also consulted and designed for some very practical and real world applications, this is something that is lost to most artists of our day. In our factory assembled modern era it is not encouraged to be a renaissance man, but that was not always the case in history. I believe in the importance of being an expert in a field but the modern culture that we live in has overvalued specialization to the point where “Jack of all trade” is a derogatory term used to describe someone who never focuses their energy.
Despite going through an education system that stressed contributing to society by specializing as a professional in a single field, I decided to go another route. After finishing a BA in English Literature with a minor in Religion and Theology I continued another 3 years taking what I call an RM (Renaissance Man). During my RM I studied fine art, natural sciences, mathematics, political science, history of warfare, Asian history, art history, music history, drama, religion and theology, physical education, bio-ethics, geology, multiple forms of literature, science fiction literature, and biology. None of this information has gone to waste. With the proper approach all of this knowledge can be leveraged to help a renaissance man grow across multiple fields and then focus this intertextual knowledge back to his current work.
My work is an expression of my experience. It has been a long road to get to where I am today and my art is an evolving expression of this journey. CTP – Concrete Tactile Painting.
My sculptures are like tactile painting. But unlike paintings my work is designed to be touched. “Concrete Tactile Paintings” stimulate both your sense of vision and your sense of touch. The idea came to me while I was thinking of all the joy I get from good vision and how thankful I am for healthy eyes. I decided I wanted to create a type of painting that could be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of what primary senses you rely on to get you through life.
I think of them as a modern and evolved form of bas-relief. Much of my work has it’s roots in Donatello’s “rilievo stiacciato” which is a shallow form of bas relief. My artistic influences are Donatello, De Vinci, Basquiat, Pollock, Kline, Noguchi, Warhol, Murakami and Kandinsky. I have borrowed from all of them to create this hybrid art form. I am combining the texture and depth of sculpture with the colour and graphic impact of paint and printed work. Pictures are nice but these really need to be seen in person to fully understand the depth and intricacy and impact of each sculpture.
I have developed my sculpting and casting techniques independent of outside influence from school or other artists. My technique and style is not only unique but it is also not repeatable by another sculptor.
My sculptures are made out a proprietary high performance concrete mix; the result of 4 years of R&D from Concrete Cat Design House. My concrete formula has compression and tensile strength 5 times higher than average construction grade concrete mixes. All sculpture colouring is integral to the mix and coloured all the way through each piece, it is not a topical stain or paint. Each piece is incredibly strong and if supported properly could withstand the impact of a fastball. Our mix will actually strengthen over time and unlike paintings my sculptures can be installed in incredibly humid environments, and require almost no cleaning or maintenance. The inherent strengths of the material properties of concrete open up some incredible opportunities for really interesting installations.
On average I cast my sculptures to be ½” thick. This means the overall weight of a piece relative to size is light enough to be hung on walls, suspended from ceilings with a range of mounting and framing options that I provide as an option.
Most pieces I make are double sided, and it is up to the client to decide which side will be hung. We provide mounting options that allow clients to reverse which side they would like displayed. It is also possible to suspend pieces in a way that both sides can be viewed at all times. Read Less
