After graduating from Royal Oak High School in Michigan as co-valedictorian, Andrew Whiteman enrolled at Oberlin College, in Oberlin, Ohio, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Religion in late 2012. Despite relocating to Ohio during the academic year to attend the school, he has maintained strong ties to Michigan. In the summer of 2008, Andrew Whiteman worked in the state as a counselor at Cranbrook Day Camp, a position he had filled several times during high school. He also volunteered in support of a ballot initiative to fund the Detroit Institute of Arts in the summer of 2012.

In Ohio, Mr. Whiteman earned a John Frederick Oberlin Merit Scholarship during each of his years at Oberlin. He also assisted a member of the school’s biology faculty during the winter and spring of 2008. He worked in the lab for a professor, whom he helped to research muscle contraction and regulation by conducting gene sequencing on mutated nematodes. In addition to completing his studies, Mr. Whiteman ran varsity cross country for Oberlin for three years and competed in track for the school for two years.

Though he has returned to Michigan for several summers, Andrew Whiteman opted to remain in Ohio during the summer of 2009. He held an internship at a zoo in Cleveland, Ohio, during the period, which saw him observing primates and monitoring their medical and social well-being. Mr. Whiteman worked under the supervision of a graduate research assistant during the internship, which came on the heels of a winter project during which he observed primates and cheetahs at the same zoo.
