SCHOOL OF CREATIVE ARTS (FINE ART)

The Bachelor of Fine Art degree program aims to provide students with a rich and varied range of experiences, with many opportunities for development built into the program structure. This section of the catalogue features students who are completing the Bachelor of Fine Art Program in 2015.

Students studying towards the BFA have enjoyed many successes and important professional experiences in 2015. In June, Jessica McLeod-Yu was selected to participate in a month long internship at the Melbourne International Animation Festival (MIAF). She is also to be congratulated for her success in being selected as a leader to attend the University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) in Hong Kong.

Bachelor of Fine Art student, Jessica Kellar, received a Highly Commended Award and $1500 prize for her drawing View from Watt Street, which was entered in the 2015 Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award. Bachelor of Fine Art/TAFE articulation student, Lily Ward, was a finalist in the Hutchins Art Prize, Tasmania. This is a biennial award open to artists working in Australasia and the Pacific Rim for works on paper. Lily received the Artery Student Award of $1000 for her work Left and Right Creation Story and Deborah Harkham was the 2015 recipient of the William Fletcher Foundation Award of $1000 for 2D art. Danielle Minett was also recently awarded the National Campus Art Prize for Sculpture.

International travel is encouraged in the discipline of Fine Art as a particularly enriching experience for students. In July this year, fourteen students enrolled in AART3140 spent two weeks in the United States, visiting New York and Los Angeles, under the guidance of Dr Kit Messham-Muir. Other international study opportunities have included semester long Study Abroad programs in Germany, Hong Kong, Canada and
the United Kingdom and short course summer schools in Italy.

Work Integrated Learning is a focus of the BFA program through courses such as Directed Study. In 2015 students have undertaken internships with many cultural organisations in Australia and internationally. Students have travelled to San Francisco, USA, the United Arab Emirates and Cambodia to participate
in targeted traineeships. Nationally, students have taken part in programs in animation, arts/health research, curatorial and gallery management and creative workshops in high schools.

The Conversations in Art program is a lecture series open to all students in Fine Art. In 2015 a range of
distinguished speakers were invited to engage with the cohort. Guests included Julie Squires, Benison Kilby, Tom Kearney, Kate Beckingham, Sarah Mosca, Meaghan Tardif-Bennett, Rhiannon Newton, Georgina Brinkman, Will French, Cadi McCarthy, Braddon Snape, Chris Dolman, Pia Larsen, Kusum Normoyle, Fan Dongwang, Neil Mansfield, Katrin Koenning and Dr Sean Lowry.

The interdisciplinary nature of the Bachelor of Fine Art program encourages students to experiment in a broad range of media and reflect independently on the theoretical frameworks of fine art practice. The dedication and commitment of both staff and students plays an integral role in building the excellent reputation of our graduates Read Less
