Industrial Designer

I'm a sensible, driven designer with a passion for improving experiences for my users. I engage in deep collaboration with my stakeholders, design for the realities of manufacturing and budgets, and aim to provide meaningful tactile experiences with my products. I grew up working with my hands, and value frequent physical exploration as part of an informed design process.

Work Experience

Ideum

Industrial Designer II

I led the industrial design of Ideum's most popular ruggedized digital interactive products, where large format touch screens and high performance computers blend seamlessly into museums and other public spaces. I authored US patent #10,255,509, describing my novel design for a touchscreen enclosure design. Redesigned Ideum's most popular products to leverage DFM and DFA, and created improvements in technical product performance, human factors through ADA compliance, and the line's aesthetics. These redesigns resulted in an overall cost reduction of 60% for metal components and 40% for assembly time. I sourced a new vendor network to achieve my design intents, Ideum's budget, and our need for on-time quality. Collaborated closely with the hardware team to create new products, and a new part numbering system to enhance vendor communication, revision tracking, and inventory management. Beyond our regularly offered product, I also designed many custom projects for clients including IDEO, the Smithsonian, The White House, XPRIZE, and more.

Fryer Machine Systems

Design Engineer

Designed CNC milling machines and lathes, oversaw one in-house engineer and one Fryer engineer in Taiwan, produced 3D CAD and manufacturing drawings for milling and casting processes, and authored suitability studies for customers interested in our machines. Designed Fryer’s flagship XP-32, a fully custom 2-axis head used in 5-axis machining, as well as custom machines and fixtures for clients including Martin Guitars, Lenox Tool, and Raymond Forklifts.

Ducduc

Product Engineer

I designed and photographed furniture for ducduc and The New Traditionalists. Retooled their Inventor CAD catalog to reduce custom order fabrication drawing package lead times from 3+ days to 6 hours using table-driven design. Evaluated fabrication and assembly methods to reduce errors and increase shop efficiency. Produced a body of conceptual work for complete redesigns of the ducduc Alex line, before being asked to return to Fryer Machine Systems.
