Todd Hainline

Visual Artist and Art Instructor

Madrid, Spain
My work questions the relationship between things living and energy. I study cells, seeds, viruses, medicines, space physics, and circular forms. Contextual aspects of my work address transcendence, and human physical and esoteric energy. My work often has a departure point from contemplating images and recalling experiences that involve memory and human energy. Some of these have included microscopic virus and pollen images, and additionally circular forms created by the Dervish and Kecak performers. Additionally, some of my work explores how text and written words are linked to texture. Words on a page function as textures to the retina, and they can dually serve to visually communicate a message without literally signifying denotative meaning.

In my studio I work on multiple images during work sessions. Commonly one work finishes first as I develop others. Sometimes the material tests I produce are pleasing and yield works in themselves. It is not uncommon that I wait until the following day to decide which are completed once the wet surfaces have dried. However, my most confident art making occurs when I am manipulating fluid materials on the surface of my image, lacking some control of them, but working with them. This rare and graceful moment of harmonious dialogue between me and my materials is an aspect that I crave in my work process.

Visual aspects of my work include texture, organic-shaped circles, text, and the relationship of micro to macro. Most of my work is non-objective, mixed media and involves pushing familiar materials to vulnerable points. This alchemic type process facilitates unexpected visual effects that result from a mix of control of materials and my initial inability to control the precise outcome of them. My recent explorations have taken me to video, sound, light, recontextualization of natural vs man-made objects, and written instructions for works of art.

Work Experience

The American School Of Madrid

Visual Arts Instructor

I am a pedagogical member of a diverse international community of educators preparing students for college. My teaching strength includes cultivating students’ curiosity of the world and guiding them to their understanding of it and their position in it. I strive for engagement in the artistic process. I coach them to communicate effectively, defend their works, achieve their personal goals, and develop a kinship with the humanities. They practice critical thinking skills, investigation strategies, and reflective judgment. Their experience in my classroom is practically intended to guide them towards finding a college that suits their needs, positions them in a global society, and to guide them to personal satisfaction through the creation of images, objects, and moments. My students are individuals that can empathize with our world as they create, understand, and discuss art.

The American School Of Madrid

Head of Visual and Performing Arts

With the strong collaborative support of the administration at the American School of Madrid where I currently teach, I created and developed the Art Course offerings and instigated the formation of the Visual and Performing Arts Department. We have a digital facility of 22 computers with high end graphics cards, a green screen room for video, and I am currently working towards the implementation of 3D scanners. I also enjoy assisting students with their university strategies such as their portfolio selection and the development of supplemental college material. I take pride in being able to say that all of the students that have made their art portfolios under my guidance have secured placement at the art colleges of their choice.
