Bio:
Originally from Colombia, Susana Raffo has been a passionate artist from an early age. Currently she has a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, those four years of education earned her the "Best Portfolio" in the Industrial Design department in her graduating class, being the only female made this winning a very exiting mark in her career.
Raffo is fascinated with the idea of creating projects that combine utilitarian value with a high sense of aesthetics, seeking new paradigms and accessible innovation for the concerns of those least favored by the system, such as the dispossessed and people with
disabilities. For her final thesis, she has been developing a project that proposes a re-design and re- structuring of the kitchen in all of its aspects, adapting it to the needs of the visually impaired and people with other disabilities.
Outside of the framework of industrial design, Susana is an avid and versatile artist with an independent vision. Working within different disciplines of fine and plastic arts such as painting, installation and sculpture, she explores with applications of diverse media and intersections of genres, such as surrealism, abstract art, conceptual art, illustration, etc. Besides multiple first-place recognitions in art contests at the high school level, in 2007 she received a first-place award at the Broward Art Fair in the Visual Arts category. The Art Institute has also recognized her work and showcased it as a model in different exhibitions, like for example in their 2012 “Green Design” display and their “Toy Design” display. Some of her paintings of personal and political character were featured as the main artwork at the event “L'art des Femmes,” an exhibit offered by the emerging Miami feminist organization R.Y.P.E., presented in 2012 at the “Barrio Workshop” gallery in Little Havana, Miami. Raffo has collaborated in various projects of different nature. Most saliently, she worked as a
costume and make-up designer for the multimedia-physical theater project “Assassins for One Night,” presented at the Miami Dade County Auditorium in summer 2011. “Assassins” was an adaptation of a script by Cuban playwright José Triana, choreographed by renowned artist Alexey Taran and directed by himself and filmmaker Carla Forte. In her last project, Susana was in charge of set, costume and make-up design for “Mahagonny,” a theatrical production of the Miami-based organization Antiheroes Project, Inc., which is based on an opera by German playwright Bertolt Brecht.
