Artist, photographer and native Texan, Courtney Campbell produces photographs that aim to capture the unconscious thoughts of her viewers thus provoking a visceral reaction. After experimenting within the realms of drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, animation and graphic design; she found her passion for photography. From 2011 to 2014 she attended the Art Institute in both Houston and San Antonio, Texas therefore earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography degree.
She produces artwork to defy normality, generate the uncomfortable, illuminate the ostracized, and to experiment with certainty. There are many dark themes throughout her photography that depict the struggle and definition of identity, childhood, fears and the creation of fictional characters and narratives. Courtney has a developed a pronounced interest in highlighting alternative lifestyles such as circus, sideshow, and burlesque performers; and collaborates with individuals within San Antonio’s horror, comic and film community.
Her inspiration is drawn from many places. The technical aspects such as color and lighting are drawn from classical and renaissance paintings. Her work is inspired by photographers such as Sally Mann, Jerry Uelsmann, Joel-Peter Witkin, Lori Nix, Annie Leibowitz and Mary Ellen Mark.
Courtney currently works as a full-time photographer for The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Communications and Marketing Department; as well as being the owner and sole photographer of her company, Sparx Photography. She currently is a volunteer photographer for San Antonio Pets Alive, the San Antonio Zoo, the San Antonio Zombie Walk and the San Antonio Wookiee Walk.
