The core of my inspiration lies in the land; geological features, maps, and water have captivated me. Mountains allow an affirmation of our infinitesimal humanity through the Sublime; however, I find coastal regions far more engaging. Water plays a key role in my coastal fascinations; beaches are where two substances collide, the fluidity of water and the seeming solidity of the land. The geological skeleton of the land is under perpetual attack by erosive waters. The extreme pressures and temperatures that created our geological world are defeated by water alone; this affirms my own human fragility creating a deep respect for nature.

Beaches are saturated in destruction, but the beauty lies in the relentless ability to recreate; rocks a million years old are reduced to sand, alluvial fans are in constant flux and salt crystals grow and dissolve repeatedly. This fascinates my arts practice. The abstract paintings and drawings begin with sound recordings made of erosive waters e.g. waves. The actions of the marks are in direct response to these sounds, creating seemingly abstract images. The Cut-out Series are simplifications of my abstract drawings, leading now on to a 3D relief contouring series. The abstract drawings are also juxtaposed with the precision of the Ackworth School Extension Drawings Series, which are inspired by geological drawings.
