Sim Fern is Principal of Upbeat Designs. As someone who formerly worked in home repairs as a teen, Sim was always driven by the need to better himself and to grow as a professional. Whether it is through his relationships with educators, mentors, peers, or skilled partners, Sim has launched himself into a unique market in a time where consumers are searching for locally-made products. He now focuses on custom upholstery, custom furniture design, and high-end millwork.

Not everyone understands what the word “millwork” means, but Sim Fern loves to spread his knowledge among those who may be unfamiliar with the term. Millwork, in general, refers to any wooden product produced in a mill, for example, crown molding for your ceiling, flooring for your foyer, a door for your entryway, or cabinets for your kitchen.

Sim Fern and Upbeat Designs fabricate all of this and more in their Brooklyn warehouse. No matter the furniture, every piece is made with care by the in-house experts who have years of designing, fabricating and millwork experience. With such a high-quality promise and a proud declaration of “Made in the USA,” you’ll know you’re in good hands with Sim and his team of talented professionals, who can create anything needed for any design, renovation or architectural project.

This level of expertise wouldn’t be possible if it were not for Sim's passion for fabricating furniture. What began as a job doing typical furniture repairs and one-off fix-it-projects turned into a passion he pursued for the rest of his life. Over the course of the early phases of his career, Sim Fern worked to fulfill warranties for furniture retailers, then shifted to repairs in mid-century furniture. Although Sim loved what he was doing, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing in his life. The opening of the Upbeat Designs’ warehouse combined Sim’s love for restoring and fabricating furniture, but also created a gateway for steadier business and a career in the field he loved.

Looking towards the future, Sim Fern is aware that he needs to stay on top of news and trends in the interior design and architecture worlds. He recognizes that furniture fabrication design will always evolve, but it’s essential to maintain the balance aesthetically pleasing design with utilitarian purpose. To stay on top of business trends, Sim attends the annual Architectural Digest Design Home Show. From implementing tech seamlessly into furniture and woodworking, to creating foldable modular furniture, to 3D printed projects, Sim Fern is interested in exploring the exciting changes that are happening in the fabrication and design world.
