My "artworks" tend to originate as accidents of observation: a boot-print of rain glistening noticeably on the floor, for example, or a vivid piece of junk mail shimmering below the torn surface of a sheet of bubble wrap. Out of such observations I try to create evocative images by assembling layered textures, oblique dimensions, and structures resembling musical fugues. My favorite materials include ballpoint ink, obsolete calendars, bruised tissue paper, ribbons, punctuation, low-resolution pictures, double-sided tape, Hangul script, elements of contrast, photographs of photographs, anything iridescent, and electronic papier-mâché. Thematically my current artworks explore the Korean DMZ, the strange duality of the Koreas, nostalgia, postmemory, han, injury, and how it feels to be Korean American. Read Less
