Hi there! I’m Scott Savage, a designer & user experience fanatic from the DC Metro area.

By day, I’m the Director of Product Experience - a hybrid Product Management / User Experience role - at Strayer University. I oversee several of our key student-facing websites and mobile apps, and provide my expertise to the entire organization (both faculty and corporate) to ensure that all of the software and websites our students use is intuitive, functional, good looking, and innovative for their learning experiences.

By night, I’m an avid reader, collector of gadgets, scifi nut (Star Trek, Doctor Who, Star Wars), and amateur novelist. I’m the son of a writer & an amateur actress, and have a deep passion for the arts – especially music. My playlists are an eclectic mix of rock, pop, EDM, classical, and early 1990’s rap. Like I said, eclectic.

My passion is telling stories. The amazing thing about doing UX work is that your day revolves around building narratives that should compel people to want to use the tools you make, and to understand what people need to accomplish their own goals. The passion of my customers is my satisfaction with the work I’ve done.

My design process is fairly straightforward. I like to start by gathering the basic requirements – either on paper or with Evernote. Then I tend to hand-sketch pieces of the UI’s and the workflows. Ideation sessions with other designers, developers, BA’s, and customers are always amazingly helpful and fun. I do my prototyping in Sketch, Axure, and Adobe XD, depending on what level of interaction is needed for demoing functionality & design.

At this point in the process, I’ve also integrated at least one or more of the fundamental UX research principals, be it personas, card sorting exercises, A/B testing, or direct/indirect user research through surveys and interviews. This is crucial to the process when designing something new from scratch, in my opinion.

Once designs and flows are approved, I move on to hand-coding the HTML and CSS, usually with Dreamweaver, although I’ve been enjoying Brackets recently. My JavaScript isn’t masterful, but it’s passable and I’m well-versed in working with jQuery and jQuery UI libraries. I deliver my code to the developers, and work with them directly to implement and make changes & tweaks as necessary. Read Less
