Redger R. Westerdijk

MA

Utrecht, Netherlands
Hi, my name is Redger and I am a Dutch fun lovin' Art Director & Digital Creative.

Ever since I was a child I have had this instinctive urge for creating things. From sketches and drawings to colorful paintings. When I was 21 years old I got hooked on the medium called video.

Since that moment I have focused almost exclusively on video design and storytelling. I specialize in concept development, digital video design, art direction and honest visual branding. I started my own company visual/industries after my MA graduation in 2007.

I have worked for brands like MTV, Nike and several Dutch Broadcasters, Advertising Agencies and Non-profit organizations but I also love to work on smaller projects. Whether working on Digital Video, Video Installations, Motion Graphics or Design Projects it is my objective to deliver easy to use creative and professional quality content.

From 2008 till 2011 I have worked for Endemol Nederland Media Groep as a concept developer and art director.

In my spare time you can find me creating films, write about and discuss video on my blog, sailing , mixing margarita’s, love ABC's Chili Sauce and I still love to paint.

Education

Hogeschool Voor De Kunsten Utrecht

BA, Bachelor of Art and Technology in Digital Video Design

Within the BAT Digital Video Design course, you are given an all-round training. You acquire expertise in the areas of direction, camerawork, lighting, sound, music and production. You increase your technical skills, and learn the logic of digital equipment and software. You become proficient in image processing techniques, editing and special effects, in combining image and sound and in new media applications. You develop your own ideas into strong concepts, and realise these in short, clip-type films, theatrical presentations, multimedia events or projections. The field of digital video design covers not only video productions, but also DVD productions, interactive installations, multimedia presentations and video shows for events and festivals. The connection between technology and design is an important element. You are innovative in the areas of image, direction and technique, and work in a contemporary area.

Open University Of London

MA, European Media

The MA Digital Video Design uses digital video technologies to produce, in small teams, documentaries, short fiction productions and television orientated formats. The course involves setting up two audiovisual projects and writing a thesis.

The first project you work on is an external assignment. The external assignments are commissioned by national corporations, institutions and leading Dutch broadcasting companies. There are also connections with the Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht. You might for example be working on an adaptation of a classic Dutch documentary (the result of which will be shown at the Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht), or a concept-based experiment in the context of genre conventions (fiction), or an audiovisual project that relates to a specific social and cultural domain (like a hospital or a museum). The specific qualities of you as a student determine the project to which you will be assigned.

It is also possible to widen your perspective as an audiovisual designer by developing your skills in another direction, for instance by participating in an assignment project from another MA pathway (e.g. making short films for the internet, designing an interactive documentary or fiction dvd, or doing research and scriptwriting for a video game). The second project is an individual production in a personal style, mostly made in collaboration with other students. You write a thesis that is of relevance to your personal project. On a theoretical and critical level you will learn how to develop a critical attitude towards your own work and design process and towards productions in the professional field.
Focus

The MA Digital Video Design has particular strengths for supporting research and development in film and video production and time based new media. The course has particular experience in the areas of issue-based documentary and short, fictional moving image work.

* Documentary research and production
* Scriptwriting for different kind of television formats and documentary forms
* Narrative/Non-narrative practices
* Short fiction scripting and production
* Postproduction and compositing techniques for video, film and the internet
* Concept development and production for experimental video
* Interdisciplinary approaches in the relation between internet and television
* Interactive documentary making

Underpinning the study of these aspects is a close attention to the exploration of different modes of meaning construction within the animated film. Experimenting with the formal strategies of traditional and non-traditional video and film production is expected and encouraged.
The specific aspects of film history and theory that can be supported include:

* Independent film and video
* Documentary
* Narrativity
* Underground and structuralist cinema
* Moving images on time based media

You will also follow lessons designed to support and enhance your capacity for critical self-evaluation and reflection on your work.
