Communicate. Then, get out of the way.

It is difficult to frame design within a philosophy without incriminating oneself. Plato surely would have something to say about the idea in itself and Marx would have something to say about design’s role in class struggle. I don’t know what design is supposed to be or do, any more than I know the purpose of art. Expression in and of itself is useless to the greater balance of humanity, and the idea that design is in service to the masses is presumptuous, at best. I do know that if I am to solve any problem as a designer, it is to facilitate communication. The rest is either propaganda or wishful thinking. Buckminster Fuller really said it best, without politicking, “When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty but when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong.”
