------------

I capture vignettes of moments, whether real or fragments of my internal narrative. I have always had an interest in storytelling and in illustrations within books. With training in art history and the work of the masters, I value the tradition of representational art. Having come from a career as a graphic designer and motion graphics artist, I emphasize strong compositions and color used for impact and to communicate emotions. I am also interested in motion and objects suspended in motion, as if taken from a still video frame. My influences include Degas’s early portraits that set up psychological intrigue, Manet’s depictions of costume and form, and Van Gogh’s premise that all subject matter is figurative, even landscapes. Moving into the past century, I have been influenced by Man Ray’s monotype prints and by Elizabeth Peyton’s romanticized contemporary portraiture and use of bold, simplified color fields. I bring all these influences to bear in my oil paintings.
