After years teaching a range of courses in Georgia public schools, from Drama to AP English, I pulled the plug on my tenure and took a leap back into university instruction. Why? Sometimes we need to make decisions based on what works. For now, I am eager for motivated students, a professional environment that offers opportunities for growth, research, and challenge, and a location that mixes elements of "Wow!" and "Ahhhh!" So, when offered the position, I jumped at the chance to revisit Morocco and to teach ESL at a university located, somewhat more coolly, in the Mid-Atlas mountains.

ABET-accredited Engineering Online Programs From State Universities

A handful of chemical engineering online degree programs are available in the United States. This article reviews the top options for distance learners.
ABET, Inc. – the independent, nonprofit organization which assesses technology and engineering programs in the United States – has accredited hundreds of traditional undergraduate university programs. However, only a select few engineering online programs are offered by schools which have received ABET accreditation for their undergraduate programs.

This article reviews the top three online programs in chemical engineering and details how their distance learning systems work.

Chemical Engineering Online Degree – Kansas State University
Kansas State University offers a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering among its engineering online programs. KSU delivers its online courses to students in a variety of ways:

K-State Online delivers interactive, web-based classroom experiences to students on an asynchronous schedule
Videotapes containing recorded lectures are available for those courses which supplement the learning with physical materials
CD-Rom-based courses provide physical compact disks which contain recorded lectures, course materials, slide shows and text documents
Audiocassette tapes of recorded lectures are available
K-State Online also provides discussion forums which allow students to communicate about learning issues, and email is used extensively for personal communications between professors and students.

KSU does not differentiate between distance learning degrees and those earned on campus on its diplomas or in its records. This is primarily because online students learn from the same faculty, and complete the same curricular goals, as on-campus students.

Chemical Engineering Online Degree – North Carolina State University
NCSU offers a Masters of Science in Chemical Engineering among its engineering online programs. Its courses are delivered via an online system for distance learners, and streamed lectures can be viewed whenever it is most convenient for students. This asynchronous schedule provides a high degree of flexibility for working and nontraditional students.

The online system also provides students with access to library resources, student support services, and discussion threads through which students and professors are able to communicate about topics and projects.

NCSU online students pursuing a chemical engineering degree receive instruction from the same faculty which teaches on-campus, and distance learning degrees are identical to those earned on-campus.

Chemical Engineering Online Degree – University of North Dakota

The University of North Dakota offers an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering among its engineering online programs. Courses are delivered over an online platforms, and online classes consist of on-campus lectures which are digitally recorded and posted online. Students have the flexibility to view these lectures whenever it is most convenient for them.

There is a yearly travel requirement, as UND requires students to attend a lab session (usually lasting one-to-two weeks) during the summer in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Students who cannot commit to this yearly summer travel should not pursue a distance learning degree at UND.

UND estimates that the distance degree takes six years to complete, though this can be shorter for those students who enroll with work experience, as UND can waive credits requirements based on such experience.

For more information on admission requirements and tuition, contact UND at 1-800-342-8230.
