Niels grew up in a family of artists, painters, information technicians and sound engineers. Through this exposure, he has developed a wide array of skills that he has been applying to various situations. Although he began to pursue dance as his main art form, he felt that through this language, he was not fully expressing his creative potential. He now endeavours to develop his skills as a well-rounded creative artist, drawing from his various talents and experiences to create work of high quality and of deep value to society.
Niels studied at the Ballet Junior of Geneva (BJG) between 2011 and 2014, where he was given the opportunity to work with a number of high profile choreographers Roy Assaf, Barak Marshall, Idan Sharabi, Andonis Foniadakis and Stijn Celis. He also performed works by Hofesh Shechter, Alexander Ekman and Gustavo Ramirez Sansano. During this period, the directors of the BJG, Sean Wood and Patrice Delay, encouraged Niels to explore his talents in photography and filmmaking, giving him the opportunity to produce trailers for their productions and interview clips with the relevant choreographers.
In September 2014, Niels began working as a dancer with Malta’s newly founded national dance company ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble (ŻMDE), under the artistic direction of Mavin Khoo. He performed works by Mavin Khoo and Ivan Perez Aviles in Malta, Europe and Asia. Niels simultaneously produced PR videos, photos and some design projects for the company outside of his role as a dancer. This led to the company offering him the tailor-made role of full-time Creative Resident Artist. Within this role, Niels carried out various creative projects including the composition of a musical score for ŻMDE’s full-length production, Home, the creation of a 30-minute performance for children, Balloon et L’Ame, poster design and video clip production. He also directed various education and outreach projects and worked as an assistant choreographer, sound engineer and production manager for ŻMDE and other independent companies.
After experiencing numerous issues as self-employed artist and feeling the need for an independent creative outlet, Niels, along with Florinda Camilleri, Greta Muscat Azzopardi and Johannes Buch, set up The Amber Spark Company in 2017. The Company offers a variety of creative products and services. After establishing a support platform for local artists and creative practitioners, The Amber Spark will eventually set up an outreach and education branch, and they aim to, along with support from a legal team, change the way that Arts are perceived in Malta.
