After obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design in 2007 from the American University of Beirut, I joined Al Mohtaraf, a design house that is renowned for its expertise in publication and Arabic typeface design. There, I gained experience in bilingual typesetting and extensive exposure to Arabic calligraphy, type design and handlettering. I became sensitive to the smallest details in strokes, letters, and counter spaces, which piqued my interest in typography at large.
My subsequent job with Kite Creative allowed me to specialize in branding. I learned how to approach brands from the perspective of market positioning and business strategy, and how to apply a rigorous, conceptual and inventive process to create the visual building blocks that make up a brand identity. Each brand identity that was created was then compiled into a comprehensive set of brand standards.
My current freelance work entails mainly branding and publication design. It gives me a well-rounded understanding that requires me to be on top of not only design, but client management, accounting and production supervision. I am able to provide one-to-one attention to my clients, acting as their partner and listening to their needs and expertise, while offering my skills and knowledge to reach a solution we are both content with. I insist that the work process begins with information, whether it is conducting research or structuring existent information, as strong design must be supported by a strong foundation. I always encourage my clients to run the design by focus groups as I believe that a design only succeeds once it has passed the test of feedback loops and shows that it communicates the message correctly.
Studying the piano has an equally important role in my life. It teaches me patience, discipline, multi-tasking and perfectionism, and reinforces the principles I practise in design that revolve around color, nuances, foreground and background. The composers whose music I enjoy most playing are Schumann and Ravel.
