Matt Miley

Graphic Designer

Stockholm, Sweden
I am a multidisciplinary creative and visual artist living and working in Stockholm, Sweden. I am originally from Louisiana and Mississippi (in U.S. South) where I obtained a bachelors degree (B.S.) in graphic design from Mississippi College in 2005. Following the completion of my Master’s degree in Fine Arts (M.F.A.) at Florida State University (2009), I immediately moved to New York City to work at the School of Visual Arts (SVA NYC) from 2009-2013.

As a multidisciplinary designer, I have training and experience in traditional graphic design processes (typography, brand-name development, ad-visuals, packaging, etc.) as well as front-end web development and interaction design strategy.

My experiences as an art instructor at Mississippi College and Florida State University include creating giving lectures, executing technical demonstrations, and presenting student work for others to see. Class content included visual art history and theory, epistemology, philosophy, and technical skills with design software (eg Adobe Creative Suite).

As a visual artist in the contemporary art context, I recently joined the Northern European and Scandinavian art communities where I plan to vigorously generate and exhibit work in the region. I lived and worked in New York City between 2009-2013 where I exhibited in Chelsea (Manhattan) and Brooklyn where I built the Pinion Gallery, along with the artist David Mcleish. I have formed a cohesive vision that incorporates extracted visual fragments from the deep south in the U.S. and my new home in Scandinavia. I is currently working on a new series of paintings and installations entitled "The Mesencephalon Trickster", involving zoomorphic and landscape features in a state of becoming or becoming undone.

The School Of Visual Arts

Graphic Designer / Operations Manager

Matt came to work for the SVA Computer Store during a period of transition and growth. The store evolved from essentially being the on-campus Apple educational reseller to the centralized purchasing arm for all of the technology on campus. Additionally the store became the destination place for the branded merchandise for the entire college. The volume of work exploded during this time including the added responsibilities to maintain a comprehensive real time inventory system, an integrated and robust retail financial system with an on-the-street storefront presence. The bulk sales for the store, including department procurement, went from $4.4 million US dollars in 2010 to $8.5 million dollars in 2011. Matt’s primary focus was to ensure that this suddenly complex operation ran smoothly and effectively working closely with the store’s director.

Job responsibilities:
Matt supervised staff members by delegating tasks, overseeing daily sales output, evaluating staff performances, and interviewing applicants for job openings when needed. Another responsibility that Matt was charged to do was to manage the store’s advertising and promotional materials. He did this by updating the store website and catalog on a daily basis. The catalog and website consisted of a comprehensive listing of the computers, software, and other technology that the store has in current inventory. Due to Matt’s education and experience in graphic design, SVA asked him to take on this responsibility instead of hiring a full-time, in-house graphic designer. The store offers education discounts, technology seminars, and seasonal sales to students at SVA. Matt used design software to create promotional materials for these events and sales. The store’s inventory consisted of over 12,000 different skus at approximately $500,000 US Dollars. Matt also processed and tracked SVA departmental sales and shipments, researched new products, and presented to students at SVA school orientations each term.
