I am a filmmaker and photographer, and I work with digital video and old and new forms of photographic processes. I enjoy exploring common experiences in an abstract way. When creating art in this way, I hope to elevate what it means to be human. I want my work to express a common ground between people by exposing common experiences that are usually kept secret. These experiences can be loneliness amongst crowds, rejection from family, childhood trauma and disfigurement, the horror of menstruation, the sickness of boredom, the fear and anxiety of birthdays, teenage abortion, and sociopathic children.
What I hope to achieve through my work is a connection between humans that may not have existed otherwise. I wish to engage the viewer in a memory or an empathetic response. I instigate openness between myself and the viewer and promote acceptance of other humans that you may or may not have accepted before.
When investigating these ideas, my inspiration comes from religious texts, pulp crime novels, film noir, Italian westerns, samurai films from the 40s through the 80s and anything science fiction. I love tales of revenge, mystery and horror. I want to give people an experience and let them discover how they feel about it. I want viewers to feel ambiguity and also direct intention in everything they see.
I choose to work with video and photography because of its implication of truth. For example, photographs are used in crime scenes as well as weddings. Our initial reaction is that both events are factual, however, as we have all experienced, there is more to the story than a dead body and perfectly composed newlyweds. Films are used all over the world to entertain, inform, and also to create experience for the mind and the body. I hope to create an experiences that allow people to open their perception of the world to include all experiences, and not just those that are socially acceptable. Read Less
