I joined Black Africa in May. Feel lucky to be asked to join such a fabulous group of people. Still trying to get my feet, but the Black tribe really went out of their way to make me feel welcome.

I decided to move back to Cape Town in December 2012 after almost 9 years abroad. I am currently freelancing for some of my clients back in Bahrain and working on new projects in Cape Town.

I was approached by one of the largest publishing houses in Bahrain, to manage the design department of their corporate communications. This department promotes, designs and develops corporate communications for the Company’s own publications as well as for a wide variety of clients.

The main clients were from various industries such as a Petroleum Investment Corporation, a Refinery, the Project Management Institute and an Engineering Society.

In addition to the bigger clients, we did branding and advertising for a few smaller companies, such as a clothing retailer, a restaurant, a laundry and a few others, as HCC was one of the registered suppliers of Tamkeen (a Bahraini government initiative to help small start-up companies by paying a percentage of their communication budget).

I also managed and designed a magazine - PMI (Project Management magazine) from original design to delivery, this was a real challenge as I’ve never handled magazines before. I did however fall in love with magazine layout, a new avenue to explore!

I started wit HCC in November 2011 and I believe that I was able to justify their faith in me in managing such a crucial department. It was demanding yet very satisfying. I have been treated with great respect and given free range to manage the studio and ensure delivery of projects.

I was offered a position at one of the most reputable advertising agencies in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Project management from start to finish: interpret brief; brainstorm with team; research; moodboards; sketching of ideas; manage and collate pitches and presentations; manage studio; execution of design, advertising, branding and packaging projects; oversee/execute finished art and photo editing.

Clients: Bahrain Egovernment, Tamkeen (A government initiative to help Bahrainis achieve), big banking/financial corporations such as ABC, Bahrain Credit, Mumtalakat and SICO, smaller banks such as NFH and Sakana, a shipping company (Banz), Bahrain Duty Free and Bahrain Airport. Retail clients included a bakery in Saudi, a electronics store and a clothing outlet.

I received an offer for a full time senior position with one of Bahrain’s largest, long-established, full-service agencies. FP7 was a place that nurtured my creative abilities and opened up other areas of both design and communications media. Although the company had employed me to facilitate and manage design - which included branding - I was also actively involved in developing and launching fully integrated communications campaigns.

Their main clients included BIC (Bahrain International Circuit), Batelco (Bahrain Telecommunications Company), TRA (Bahrain Telecommunications Regulatory Authority), Manara (Property development company) and a Shopping Centre.

Miracle is a design agency, based in the Kingdom of Bahrain, employing designers from all over the world, rich in both experience and international flavour. I stayed at Miracle for three years, familiarizing myself with all aspects of a job - from client brief to finished product, interacting with various teams at all levels to see a project through to delivery.

Projects included Branding, Annual Reports, Coffee Table Books and other Corporate Communication. Main clients consisted of a Commercial Bank, Investment Company, Financial Companies and a Refinery.

At the end of July 2007, I decided to stay on in the Kingdom of Bahrain as I fell in love with this small island and the lifestyle that came with.

Motiv, as an agency, specialized in Annual Reports, Corporate Communication and Financial Advertising. The agency had 16 employees with four designers in the studio. It was an exciting and challenging position for any graphic designer. I learnt a lot about printing techniques and experimenting with paper. I maintained overall control over every job until the finished product.

In April 2000, Daniël Jansen Van Vuuren and I teamed up and Flame Design was born. In October of that year, we merged with Anton Krugel Design and I was privileged to be part of a team of four people with a myriad of skills - one with a history in publishing and layout design, another in calligraphy and line drawings and the other in logo and concept design. My position at Flame Design was Graphic and New Media Designer.
