I see design everywhere. Bus tickets, bank statements, toilet ads, signage, newspapers, keyboards, apps, packaging, print, web, screen, space. Design is written into me. It influences every aspect of my day. When I see something I like, I photograph it, I may never use it or even look at it again, but I appreciate it. When I see something I don’t like, i think about how it can be improved.

That’s my underlying aim as a Graphic Designer, the drive to improve. I want to make you / your business / your stuff look damn pretty, work damn well and sell damn lots.

This drive to improve and help manifests itself outside of the design world too, having spent the majority of my time since 2007 working with youth groups, community groups, student unions and advocacy groups, striving to improve the lives and wellbeing of others.

I will often approach a piece of work by first exploring the mood and then exploring how the type will express that mood.

Imagery can attempt to convey a message or mood, but if they type doesn’t follow that message, the whole piece fails. If the Imagery doesn’t follow the intended message but the type does, the intention of the piece will be damaged but not ruined. It’s for this reason that Typography influences my work so hugely.

My approach to Branding and Identity is to get a real feel for the personality of project and display it effectively. Just like human personality, almost all projects will have multiple elements. If my branding conveys just one message or mood then, in my view it is a failure. My approach is always to show or in some cases, cleverly hide, different aspects of a project within the finished outcome.

Personally, design should make things appealing to look at or engage with. Design should delight, should please, should relax and should challenge. My work always intends to accurately reflect but visually delight. Read Less
