Katherine Virag was born and raised in Detroit, MI. She received a BFA in Sculpture and a BS in Psychology from Louisiana State University in 2013. As an undergraduate, she also spent a year studying at Buffalo State College as a national exchange student. Fro 2011-2013 she was the Arts and Crafts Program Director for two different summer camps in Colorado, planning and leading arts and crafts projects for a variety of groups including children and adults with disabilities. Her work has been included in group shows locally and nationally and her first solo exhibition was in Buffalo, NY in 2014. In August 2015 she was an artist-in-residence at Elsewhere Studios in Paonia, CO. She currently maintains a studio at Buffalo Arts Studio. Read Less

My work is an exploration of a paradoxical view of “comfort zones”– that just because a state of mind or a physical place is familiar, it may not be the most comfortable after all. It isn’t until we break away from the familiar that we realize how much self-imprisonment we created through limiting ourselves to this perceived “comfort zone,” just as a bird is comfortable living in its nest until it realizes it can fly. My forms demonstrate this struggle between staying bound to something or breaking free. Read Less
