John Goldsmith is a documentary photographer. Born in Detroit, Michigan, John worked as a research scientist prior to taking an interest in the photographic arts. He worked in a lab using light to characterize materials, such as light-sensitive emulsions for the research and development of novel holographic applications. In 1998, John began spending his evenings in a different kind of lab taking darkroom classes at Chicago’s Jane Addams Center. His career flip came after two mergers and a pink slip, when he made the move north (and west) across the 49th parallel. He’s now a professional photographer based in Vancouver, Canada.

John’s personal work delves into the social aspects of people inhabiting the built environment. His photographs have a theatrical mood, incorporating the aesthetics and candor of contemporary street photography. Since the birth of his identical twin daughters, his family has increasingly become an integral part of his portfolio. John recently returned from a seven-month stay Down Under, which also included stop-overs in Fiji, France, Germany and Ontario, Canada. These travels serve as a basis for two works in progress, including: Flat White Short Black and Canis Major, expected to be published by year’s end.

John Goldsmith is a founding member of the Strange.rs International Photography Collective. He's also a contributor to Street Reverb Magazine. His work has been featured as part of the prestigious Format Festival 2011 in Derby, UK and Bòlit Contemporary Art Center in Girona, Spain. He was recently featured in an interview in PhotoEd Magazine with In-Public's founding member Nick Turpin. Cardiff Life Magazine, the Boston Review, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, among other notable publications, have featured John’s work. Read Less
