I have been working in mosaic for over 20 years. My design style reflects an interest in cultural diversity and human relationship to the natural world. Stained glass is my favorite material because it is colorful and luminous. Each piece of glass is carefully hand-cut and placed within the composition using skills honed over the past two decades of dedicated practice. The process of assembling cut and broken pieces into something whole and beautiful is very symbolic and can be therapeutic both for artist and viewer.
I work in two distinctive styles. My work can be remarkably realistic and detailed, using smaller pieces arranged by hue and value to create light and shadow and to give the impression of dimension. This includes natural landscapes and portraits that have an Impressionist effect. And I also make stylized work that is characterized by bold designs using large, precision-cut pieces, clear lines and high-contrast, often with folk-art and Art Nouveau influences. And, at times, I combine the two styles, with realistic portraits framed by bright shapes and patterns. Overall, there is an unmistakable common aesthetic running through my work that involves flowing, intersecting lines and an expression of celebration and joy.
While mosaic is my favorite medium, I also work in other materials. Some of my papercut designs have been cut from metal, I sometimes make concrete sculptural and relief elements, and painted murals are sometimes the best option for a particular substrate or budget.

Contracted Artist
I have created two public art projects for the Federal Way Senior Center. The first was an exterior panel featuring a garden with the Cascade Mountain Range in the background, with silhouetted workers gathering harvest. This was in honor of the new food bank and organic garden at the Center. The second was a glass-on-glass panel featuring pink Rhododendrons to enhance the Center.

Designer and facilitator: Artesian Well Community Mosaic
The Artesian Well is a public gathering place where people come from far and wide to collect untreated water for a variety of reasons. The well is constantly flowing with both water and people, and it is now covered with a colorful mosaic made of materials donated by the community, featuring mosaic fish made by more than 200 people during Olympia's spring Arts Walk festival, and completed over the following 6 weeks by volunteers. The project was a great success.

Olympia Pediatrics
Artist
I worked with a team of 3 artists to enhance the new pediatric clinic, based around a jungle and ocean theme. My work is on the front entryway, featuring opalescent glass vines climbing pillars flanking the doorway, with matching signage overhead. Three glass-on-glass panels are installed over the doors with capuchin monkeys, vines, and leaves, which capture sunlight and reflect color into the lobby.

Lawton Elementary School
Artist
I worked with the PTA and art teacher of this school to select 18 designs created by each of the 18 classes to be rendered in mosaic. Eighteen 2.5 x 2.5 foot panels are now installed in the school Commons area, with children's designs sparkling in stained glass mosaic.

Swing Wine Bar
Artist
I worked with the owners and interior designer of a new wine bar to create glass-on-glass mosaic panels that serve as walls for shelving above and surrounding the bar where gourmet cocktails are made. The shelves provide storage, and are lit from within so that the designs and color are cast onto the ceiling around the bar, creating a striking effect. I also made two illuminated panels for an eating bar and the large exterior sign.

Private Homes
artist
I have done work in private homes, from simple backsplash inserts to a 16-foot high wall featuring a slate tree mosaic. I have done the work directly, as on a large stone fireplace surround, indirectly, as onto hardi panels installed on stair risers, and I have created stained glass mosaic windows that have been shipped across the country to be installed in an existing frame. I can almost always create the project in my studio and either travel to install it (depending on distance and budget) or have it installed by your contractor. Every new project is exciting for me, and I enjoy being inspired by the colors, themes, and design of an existing space to create something that will make a home or business truly unique.

I was commissioned to create a mosaic panel in memoriam to a beloved staff member of the college. Her name, Jacinta, means Hyacinth, which was also her favorite flower. The panel features a cluster of Grape Hyacinths, and is located on the 3rd floor of the Communications Building, where she worked for many years.
