Josh Beatman's design career began as a staff designer at Albrecht Advertising in NYC but he soon realized he was better suited for freelancing. While jockeying between multiple studios an American Freak cover in Print Magazine's Design Annual caught his attention. He contacted the studio responsible for the work (Brainstorm Unlimited) and shortly after was sitting across the desk from owner/designer Richard Bruning.

A successful creative relationship was born and lasted more than a year before Bruning was offered the SVP–Creative Director position at DC Comics. Beatman grabbed the opportunity to go into business for himself, taking over Bruning's studio, renaming it Brainchild Studios/NYC, and the rest is design history.

In the comic industry specifically, Brainchild Studios' relationship with heavy-hitters DC Comics and Graphitti Designs began almost 20 years ago and has resulted in some major milestones. The San Diego Comic-Con International logo done with Richard Bruning while at Brainstorm Unlimited (1995), DC Comics' first new corporate mark in 30 years — the DC "Spin" (2005), the event car for the Batman Begins 400, part of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, driven by Mark Martin (2005), the Vertigo Crime line of graphic novels (2009) and an Eisner Award for Best Publication design for Absolute Justice, designed with Curtis King (2010), top an extensive list.

Additionally, Brainchild Studios spearheaded a brand refresh of Pfizer's Celebrex (2007) and followed up 2 years later with a refresh of Lipitor, the top-selling drug ever, world-wide (2009), both for longtime client Kaplan Thaler. He also pursues a never-ending book design career for clients such as Enigma Books, Tachyon Press, Osprey Publishing and of course DC Comics/Vertigo Comics. Read Less
