James Knight, the former president of Knight-Celotex (a division of Knight Industries, LLC), currently serves as the president of Pelletco, LLC. This Orono, Maine, firm assists businesses in switching from fossil fuels to sustainable local fuels. Also its founder, James Knight raised funds, recruited a staff, and identified customers while completing his tenure at Knight-Celotex. Moreover, James Knight brought in $1.5 million in seed capital and another $1.5 million from a business development grant. During its first year, Pelletco replaced more than 100,000 gallons of heating oil with biomass fuels, and it had positive earnings before taxes, depreciation, and amortization in 16 months.

In October 2013, James Knight received accolades for a recent Pelletco project, which involved converting the noncommissioned officer's club (known as Club 42) at the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine, from fossil fuels to biomass for heat, simultaneously reducing heating costs and helping the environment. Although Congress closed the base in 1994, the property was redeveloped as an industrial park, and Club 42 remained a popular location for weddings and retreats. Under the conversion contract, Pelletco will install a HeatPod, which burns the biomass, and the company will maintain the HeatPod and pay related bills. Read Less
