Isabelle Sanchez
Woodbridge, CT, USAIn my most recent work, I embrace the messiness, sadness, beauty, and pain of material bodies. I am interested in what it means to occupy a body and its substance, without restricting that experience to a single truth. Instead, I try to materially express the private relationship between me and my body, skin, and flesh. Not flesh as meat, nor as sex, but as a deeply subjective and personal experience.
I believe in the body and in our sensory experience as a source of knowledge. In this series, I prioritize intuition and knowledge derived from the body. I take issue with the subservience of sensation in traditional patriarchal notions of philosophy, as expressed in Descarte’s, “I think therefore I am.” Perhaps I am more concrete, but I exist through touch and sensory stimuli.
When I close my eyes I can feel the materiality of my body and the way it touches and is touched by outside forces. By creating physical evidence of this very immediate and personal sensory relationship with my body, I hope to point back at viewers’ relationships with their own bodies.
